THEO: Aargh, Veronica Mars’ fans. You’re listening to Neptune Pirate Radio.

[OPENING THEME MUSIC: Vancefurd- Pirate Song]

SANDY: Welcome back, Pirates. Hopefully you didn’t miss us too much last week. We are, I know we delayed in our podcasting from the every other week promise that we made earlier. But it was Independence Day! What did you expect?

THEO: I know. We were too busy celebrating our independence.

SANDY: Our independence from Scarlett. [Laughs]

THEO: Our independence from Scarlett in several ways, really.

SANDY: Which we continue to celebrate this week.

THEO: That’s right.

SANDY: ‘Cause she’s not here. Instead we have um, Bailey joining us.

BAILEY: Hi.

SANDY: ‘Cause we think-

BAILEY: I know I don’t really fill her shoes very well, but…

SANDY: Aw. We love you though. I mean nobody could really fill Scarlett’s shoes, but you do a really good job and it’s nice to have you here.

BAILEY: Aw.

THEO: That’s right.

BAILEY: I can try speaking with an accent but it’s really horrible so I won’t.

THEO: Thank you.

SANDY: Yeah. We all thank you. Um. Our listeners thank you. So there’s been, you know, a little bit going on in Veronica Mars land. Let’s see. Um. Emmy nominations came out.

THEO: Yes they did.

SANDY: The good thing about the Emmy nominations for me um, personally. It means that that’s three hours of my life that I’m not gonna be wasting watching the awards show.

THEO: Well. The fact that so many other good shows were snubbed as well makes me think that it’s not Veronica Mars. It’s just the uh, Emmy voters I guess.

SANDY: It’s clearly not Veronica Mars. Let’s break it down. In case our listeners are not obsessively watching um, all of this information come in in the same way that we do. Emmy nominations came out this week and there is a new voting system in place for, for the Emmys that I hear is jokingly referred to as the Lauren Graham policy. Because Lauren Graham from Gilmore Girls is traditionally overlooked in the Emmys. And they decided, okay. Well we need to right this wrong and change the system in the lead categories so that the top 10 or 15 vote getters in the big categories all submit a tape for consideration, and the Emmy panel is required to view at least one performance of all the people who are in the top 10 or 15 in each of the main categories. I believe that that’s correct. Right?

BAILEY: Mhm.

THEO: I think so. Yeah.

BAILEY: Yeah.

SANDY: And rumor had it that Kristen Bell was on the short list on the list of um, 10 or 15 to submit a tape for viewing. And everybody got really excited and thought that surely this year, either Kristen Bell or Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls, at least one of these critically acclaimed actresses who are overlooked because they’re on one of the netlets will get an Emmy nod.

THEO: But, alas.

SANDY: Neither one of them did.

THEO: Neither one.

SANDY: They both got screwed. Stupid, stupid new Emmy policy.

BAILEY: It is.

THEO: Yeah. Well not only that, but so many shows that I think last year were big fan favorites were just completely shut out. Uh. Lost and Desperate Housewives being two of them.

SANDY: Well, who cares about Desperate Housewives, but…

THEO: Well I’m still; I’m just saying critically it was big news last year, and now it’s just dropped off the face of the Earth.

BAILEY: Right.

SANDY: Well I think that’s more being treated as one of the successes of the new system, that we don’t just have four Desperate Housewives

THEO: Oh yeah.

SANDY: I think Lost is probably a bigger issue. A bigger shocker to me than Lost or Desperate Housewives is Hugh Laurie not getting a nomination for House.

BAILEY: I know.

THEO: Yes. That hurts me. That is one of uh, my absolute favorite shows.

BAILEY: He’s so amazing.

SANDY: Oh he is, and like Kristen Bell especially, he carries his show on his back. You know?

THEO: Oh absolutely.

BAILEY: Definitely.

SANDY: Kristen’s blessed with an amazing supporting cast. There’s no doubt. Everybody in the show is completely amazing. But Kristen Bell is one of the hardest working actresses in television.

THEO: Yeah.

BAILEY: Right.

SANDY: She- there is no- they did more this season with having scenes without her in them and I think next season, from what I understand from reading interviews with Rob, they’re going back to how it was in the first season, where basically Veronica’s gonna be in every scene.

BAILEY: Right.

SANDY: Because she is the star of the show. I mean, it’s just- there is no show without Kristen Bell, and it is such an amazing show, and it just- it hurts for me for her that she’s just constantly overlooked in the awards categories.

BAILEY: The thing is that she works so hard on it, like you said, she just, they’re gonna go back to having her in practically every scene. That’s a lot of work for her, and yet it’s still consistent. You don’t see her lagging in her skills like, as the season progresses or anything. She still does a fantastic job and I feel like you can’t really tell, okay, this person’s being overworked and she’s getting hard hours. You can’t really see it in her performance, I don’t think.

SANDY: I don’t think so either. I think she brings it every single time.

THEO: I think so too.

SANDY: And, it’s just frustrating. In addition to now Kristen Bell, we have to acknowledge, no Edie Falco from The Sopranos.

THEO: Oh, that’s true.

SANDY: No Jason Lee for um, Earl.

THEO: That’s true.

SANDY: No Jason. No Jason Bateman.

THEO: No um, no um. I forget the two names, but no Jim and Pam from The Office.

SANDY: Oh, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer. Yeah.

THEO: Who I thought were amazing, and especially with the finale.

SANDY: Yeah, in supporting roles. You know, the Emmy system wasn’t designed to, the new Emmy voting system wasn’t designed to benefit um, individuals in the supporting roles, but… you still sort of expected- There, you know, the one I think surprise nomination that people were really excited about was Will Arnett from Arrested Development. But that is not a result of the new Emmy voting system. So it just goes to show that while there are some nice surprises in there, like Will Arnett getting an Emmy nod, which is awesome and deserved and terrific.

THEO: Absolutely.

SANDY: The people who were supposed to be benefiting from the new system aren’t. You know?

THEO: Yeah.

SANDY: It’s just frustrating. I’m angry! I’m angry.

THEO: I’m angry as well.

SANDY: And, you know. Just know-

BAILEY: We should have our own Emmys.

THEO: Oh, that’s so true.

SANDY: Yeah. We should! Hm.

THEO: I wonder what would win? Hm. Let me think.

SANDY: What would win? Um. Best New Drama.

[THEO laughter]

THEO: Three years old.

SANDY: Best new last year drama.

THEO: It was new at some point.

SANDY: Just finding ways to manipulate the system so that Veronica Mars can win in every category. No. Um. Yeah, it’s just frustrating and I’m, I’m upset. You know, I think personally that Enrico Colantoni or Jason Dohring should get Emmy nods as well. I’m realistic enough to know that, you know. Jason Dohring is unfortunately not on anybody’s radar outside of a handful of critics and the people who watch Veronica Mars.

THEO: Yeah.

SANDY: I don’t expect him to get an Emmy nod. But you thought, I thought maybe Kristen had a chance. I will not be watching the Emmys this year. I’m done.

THEO: Done.

BAILEY: Yeah.

THEO: I never really liked the Emmys anyway.

SANDY: I didn’t watch them last year.

THEO: They always end up disappointing me in some way.

SANDY: Yeah. Ooh. Everybody Hates Chris wasn’t nominated!

THEO: Who wasn’t? I’m sorry.

SANDY: Everybody Hates Chris.

THEO: Oh. That’s true.

BAILEY: And that’s… everybody loves Everybody Hates Chris. You know?

SANDY: Exactly. I mean it got the Golden Globe nom. And to be fair, there are shows like Smallville, Supernatural, Everybody Hates Chris that got nominated in some of the smaller categories. When I say not nominated I mean in any of the major categories.

THEO: Yeah.

BAILEY: Right.

SANDY: Veronica Mars was not nominated in any category.

THEO: Right.

BAILEY: See I was really, I was really thinking Kristen Bell would get a nod. I, with Pulse coming out and how she’s been, you know, she’s doing- she goes on MTV and she’s doing all the interviews and everything. And with Pulse coming out, and she’s kind of like, being noticed a little bit more because of that, ‘cause it’s like, oh it’s a horror film and, you know, the target audience and everything. But I was just shocked. I don’t know. It just, it seems not right for her to not be nominated, you know?

THEO: Mhm.

SANDY: Yeah. It sucks. Stupid Emmys, I hate you.

[Laughter]

SANDY: Um. All right. Moving on, from what I understand the CW has started launching its Free to Be campaigns. People are starting to see Kristen Bell’s face on the side of buses. Um. Which is great. I think, you know, it’s good that the advertising for the network is getting out there. My question for you guys: What do you think about this, I’ve seen some debate online about this whole advertising Veronica Mars along with Gilmore Girls as being a girly night of television.

THEO: Hm.

SANDY: Especially you, Theo, as a man.

THEO: As a non-girl, right.

SANDY: That’s right. As a non-girl. Um. Would you be turned off by, by being advertised about a show that’s considered to be on a girly night of TV?

THEO: Well. Um. I don’t know if that’s the best sort of angle to go at advertising it. Um. I don’t know if it’s necessarily girly at all. I mean, literally very little about what I’ve seen from Veronica Mars suggests that it’s “girly.”

SANDY: Right.

THEO: I mean, so I don’t know if that’s the right approach, and I’d have to admit I still haven’t seen Gilmore Girls, so I can’t, can’t really say anything about that show.

SANDY: We’re gonna have to work on that. You’re gonna have to start watching Gilmore Girls. It really is terrific.

THEO: I think it maybe like- I’m trying. I swear. By the end of the summer I will have watched the first season. I vow to you all, all right. Um.

BAILEY: Get on it, Theo.

THEO: But I- I’m trying, I’m trying. But um, maybe the un-girliest night of television.

SANDY: You know what I think is interesting? Oh, go ahead Bailey.

BAILEY: Hm? No. Go ahead. Go ahead.

SANDY: -Is Veronica Mars has, has um, hired two new writers. Two of the female writers are leaving the show. Um. Dayna North and Cathy Belben, if I have that right, are leaving the show. And two male writers are replacing them.

THEO: Interesting.

SANDY: Both from Love Monkey. Both wrote an episode of Love Monkey.

THEO: Wow.

SANDY: And so that leaves, I believe Diane is now the last female writer on the staff.

BAILEY: Interesting.

SANDY: So it’s- you’ve got a show that’s being advertised as on this girly night of TV that’s written by all men.

THEO: Yeah.

BAILEY: I think basically, I’m not sure, like Theo said, that it’s the wisest advertising strategy. But I think it will being paired up with Gilmore Girls, it will draw in viewership, and people will stay to watch it even if they discover, hey, it’s not a girly night of TV. You know I think it will be that initial draw in of people. So it could be a smart way to advertise, and it could not. I don’t know. I guess we’ll just have to see because I think there are advantages to both. I mean it is a little misleading, I think. But I guess, like what I was saying before, is if it initially.

[Bailey disappears. Cameron thinks Bailey hit her mute button accidentally.]

SANDY: Uh, yeah. Yeah. Well, all right. I think, you know, we’ll just have to- we’ll have to wait and see. I think it’s a beneficial campaign in terms of trying to benefit from Gilmore Girls’ lead-in. But I think it’s, it’s hard to say because you could be turning off potential male viewers from the network who might have decided to give Veronica a first shot. But at the same time, if their, if their fans at the WB- I don’t wanna insult anybody out there, but if you’re a guy and you’re watching WB shows, with the exception of maybe Smallville and Supernatural, you’re watching what are traditionally labeled girly shows anyway. Which I think is a testament to you as a man being secure enough not to be offended by whatever label your TV gets. You’re just smart enough to know that you should watch whatever’s good. Regardless.

THEO: And at this point, anything to really help the ratings. You know if it can, if it can get a strong hold on any sort of demographic, if they want to just target one and then expand on that, and them move to another, that’s great. Whatever gets more butts in the seats, so to speak. So.

SANDY: Excellent point. Well I think we should take a little break, and then we’re gonna come back and talk about some exciting Meet and Greet fan events that are coming up. We’ve got a couple that are gonna be taking place this summer if you want your chance to meet the cast of Veronica Mars, and we will be back to talk about that in just a moment.

BAILEYVO: The song you are about to hear is Barely Breathing by Amy Courts. If you’d like to vote for this song in the Veronica Mars music contest, please send an email to bailey@neptunepirateradio.com with the subject line “Song #1.”

[Um. Song. Barely Breathing by Amy Courts. Bailey already told you. So… yeah.]

[Holy crap. A full song? A FULL SONG! You can’t see her happy dance, but Cameron assures you it is happening.]

THEO: Welcome back, Mars’ fans. Uh. This is the time in the podcast when we thought we’d talk a little more about some fan interaction between fans of the show and the cast of the show. So uh-

SANDY: Fan interaction with us!

BAILEY: Yeah!

THEO: That’s right! With us! Because we love you.

SANDY: We do love you! Now, there is a big event coming up in two weeks… the International Comic Con.

BAILEY: Woo!

THEO: Comic Con. Woohoo!

SANDY: Yay, Comic Con!

THEO: I’m very happy to say one of our very own will be attending.

BAILEY: Yes.

SANDY: That’s right! [Girly night giggles] I’m very happy to say that as well.

THEO: I know. That’s because it’s Sandy. She’ll be there. We’ll be here.

BAILEY: Sandy will be walking amongst the stars.

SANDY: Yeah right. Um. No I’m gonna be walking amongst the other hundred thousand people.

THEO: Walking amongst the stars. Yeah.

BAILEY: We’re all stars, okay?

SANDY: Um. Yeah. I’m gonna be um, going to Comic Con. And I’m gonna cover it for the podcast. There is gonna be- well, we should back up. First of all, I don’t know if anybody out there knows anything about Comic Con. It is the world’s- I think it’s; I believe it’s the world’s largest. There might be a bigger one than that. It’s at least the nation’s largest comic book convention.

THEO: Wow.

BAILEY: Whoa.

SANDY: Sounds like it has nothing to do with Veronica Mars.

THEO: No.

SANDY: But we should acknowledge that by comic book convention, this thing has exploded to cover all sorts of different arenas. Um, there’s gonna be people from the cast of Lost there. There’s gonna be a special presentation. It’s gonna be a video presentation from the producers and the stars of Harry Potter.

BAILEY: Ooh.

THEO: Oh wow.

SANDY: And of course, the cast of Veronica Mars is gonna be there doing a panel, um, which includes Rob Thomas, Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen, Michael Muhney, and Francis Capra, are all confirmed to be there.

BAILEY: I hate you, Sandy.

THEO: Wow. Is there anyone they haven’t booked? God. That’s impressive.

SANDY: Percy Daggs. Percy Daggs isn’t gonna be there and I’m really sad.

THEO: That’s true.

BAILEY: God, I’m just like, still sitting here slack-jawed over who all is going to be there.

[Laughter]

BAILEY: It’s like, wow.

SANDY: Yes. It’s quite um, a collection of Veronica Mars cast members, and they’re gonna do a panel on Saturday uh, which is two weeks from this weekend. Um. From 4:30-5:30 their panel is gonna take place in Room 20 at Comic Con, so if you’re gonna be there you should check it out. And hopefully give us a little dirt on Season Three and dish some more about Season Two, which would be very exciting.

THEO: Excellent. And cross our fingers, knock on wood, pray to God of whatever Internet connections exist, we may, we may- we hopefully will have a quick interview with you after the panel, and we’ll hopefully be able to premiere that on- I should say the podcast coming out in two weeks.

SANDY: Yes. I’m gonna do my best to call in and chat with you guys and give you the dirt as soon as I get it.

THEO: And that means our listeners will get the dirt before anyone else. So hopefully, hopefully we will be on top of this one. So.

SANDY: Yes. Provided that our recording software doesn’t die, and my cell phone works-

THEO: You know what? Don’t jinx it. Don’t jinx it. We’re already praying and knocking and doing cursing and whatever we need to do. So.

SANDY: Yes. But in the best case scenario, I will definitely be calling um, immediately following the panel and giving you guys all the dirt on, on what they gave us.

BAILEY: Yeah. Don’t forget to take notes.

SANDY: I will. I’m gonna have my little spy pen and notebook handy.

THEO: Very good.

SANDY: And I’m gonna also try and get some- if you’re there, and I see you, I will definitely hit you up, and- not you guys, ‘cause I know you’re not gonna be there, but you fans. If you fans are gonna be at Comic Con, I will be on the lookout for you and I will be trying to get your thoughts and call those, call those thoughts in and maybe get you on the, on the podcast as well giving us your reactions to the panel.

THEO: That sounds fun.

BAILEY: It is fun. Did you notice how she just sat there and rubbed it in?

[SANDY laughter]

THEO: I know!

BAILEY: I’m not talking about you guys.

THEO: While she’s gone, while she’s gone we might have to have a little mutiny or something.

BAILEY: I think we should have a really big party, and we should invite the people who aren’t gonna be at Comic Con, like Percy Daggs.

THEO: I think the anti-Comic Con. I like it.

BAILEY: Yes. That sounds very appealing. With premium liquor.

THEO: With premium liquor.

SANDY: Yeah. Um. Well speaking of calling in, we’re working on, um, a way for our listeners to call us in, and interact with us more, right?

BAILEY: Right.

THEO: Right.

SANDY: So yeah. So we’re working on this way to have the fans can in and interact, and ask us questions, and have basically a set time every week where we’re gonna be manning our phone lines so that you can call in and chat with us. It seems like that was a pretty popular request when we solicited suggestions for the podcast.

BAILEY: Yeah.

[They talk over each other and apologize. They arm wrestle for the right to speak. Bailey wins.]

THEO: Fulfill your dream of being a what?

BAILEY: A telephone operator. We can be like [is too quiet]

THEO: Excellent. This is all about us fulfilling our dreams. This whole thing is just great.

BAILEY: How may I direct your call?

SANDY: Yeah. I think it’d be totally fun though to actually get to speak to people who listen.

BAILEY: Oh, definitely.

SANDY: You know, you feel really disconnected I think.

BAILEY: Yeah.

SANDY: I don’t actually ever think that anybody’s out there listening to us.

[CAMERON: There is ONE person.]

SANDY: I think we’re just talking to ourselves all the time, which is cool and all, I mean I love you guys. But it would be nice to hear some different voices on here.

BAILEY: Well definitely. You can get input. You can get people just saying how they feel about it, good or bad, you know, opinions and just like, what they think we should do, ideas for different things. Because like, above all we’re doing this for the listeners. If we’re just sitting here each week talking about things that might be appealing to us but nobody else likes them, you know, what’s the point. We can talk about those things in our own time, you know.

THEO: Yeah.

SANDY: Exactly. It’s possible that only Scarlett and I have this deep, burning love for Jason Dohring. It could be.

[Laughter]

[Sandy and Scarlett must be very busy running the eight thousand fan sites dedicated to Jason Dohring’s hipbones.]

SANDY: And, you know.

THEO: You know, having been on the Internet before, uh, I’m gonna have to disagree with you there, Sandy.

BAILEY: Well, I could say that it is possible that I’m the only person in the fandom – well, maybe not the only person in the fandom – who still loves Cassidy Casablancas,

THEO: Yes. Now that one I can get behind. I think that may be true.

BAILEY: But I will keep fighting for his character until the day I die.

THEO: Or he dies, which was last spring!

BAILEY: Okay!

[Theo speaks so quietly that this barely records. But Cameron catches it.]

THEO: Sorry.

SANDY: Um. I have to say I am really sad though. We’re never gonna see, we can’t never see- after speaking with him – I liked Cassidy already – after speaking with Kyle like, can you please have Cassidy have like, an evil twin brother that was long lost in some way?

BAILEY:

THEO: Yes! Or actually it wouldn’t be like an evil twin brother, it would be the good twin brother.

BAILEY: Nobody- if nobody got it from the interview, Kyle is beyond amazing. Right?

THEO: Okay. To back up a little bit, how are people gonna contact us again? I’m sorry.

SANDY: We have a number.

THEO: We have a number, don’t we?

BAILEY: We have a number. If you dial-

THEO: You have a number.

BAILEY: If you dial: 1-818-574-8675, you could very well speak to a voice of Neptune Pirate Radio.

SANDY: Do, do, do. [That was in singsong]

BAILEY: Or at least our voicemail.

SANDY: Yes.

THEO: And please feel free to leave us messages.

BAILEY: Yes.

THEO: Even funny ones.

BAILEY: Well, you know, the funny ones might actually get put on air.

THEO: I know. I can’t wait.

SANDY: Provided I figure out how to transcribe from voicemail to recording. I’m working on it.

[CAMERON: Play. Type. Pause. Rewind. Play. Type. Pause. Rewind. Rinse, Lather, Repeat.]

THEO: That’s right.

BAILEY: I know how.

SANDY: Oh, well!

THEO: If anyone knows how, leave her a message and she will… yeah.

BAILEY: I think it’s very exciting. I think it’s cool. Well I personally for some reason have some strange affinity for voicemail to begin with. But I just think it’s a very cool feature.

SANDY: I agree.

BAILEY: ‘Cause it definitely, it puts us closer to people who are listening, and to other fans of Veronica Mars. And like I said earlier, just input and opinions, and probably we can do some segments later on where it requires people to call in. Maybe answer questions or give opinions on something we ask, you know?

SANDY: Yeah. Totally.

THEO: Yeah.

SANDY: Um. Well speaking of additional fan interaction, I think Bailey and I were talking about a contest.

BAILEY: A contest. Yes. Um. I don’t know about anybody else, but I find myself- I’ll be listening to a song on the radio or an old CD or something, and I’m like, you know what? That song would be very good on Veronica Mars. Like it would just fit in, or I could picture a scene where it would go in, or a certain character it would be good with. And so I thought that we would have a little contest where here on the podcast we play a couple songs, and then you guys vote for them and vote for which song would best fit on Veronica Mars, or what song you would like to hear on Veronica Mars in the future. And the winning song, I will put it on a disc and send it off to Rob. And I’m not sure if that’ll go anywhere, but he’ll definitely know that this is a song that fans really liked, and that fans think would fit in on the show and be good for the show. So.

THEO: Excellent.

BAILEY: We’re gonna play a couple songs.

SANDY: That’ll be a good way to get some exposure to some, some lesser-known bands.

BAILEY: Right. Right. Well like I said I’m always-

SANDY: This seems to be popular for Veronica Mars.

BAILEY: Right. I just, I get so excited. I’m like, oh my God; this one would be good for Logan and Veronica. Or oh my God! The other day I was listening to the radio, and Van Halen’s song Jump came on, and the only thing that could flit through my mind during that was the rooftop scene where Cassidy jumps off. And I’m like, that’s not right, but…

[Laughter]

SANDY: Good example. Good example, Bailey.

THEO: Good example.

BAILEY: Hey!

SANDY: Um. But no, there are a lot of times when people make- because I’ve said before, and I will say it again- I am a musicaholic. And there are lots of times people make music vids to songs I don’t necessarily know, and the song will just fit like, really beautifully with a particular scene, a particular couple.

BAILEY: Right. Especially if you’ve never heard the song before, then it takes on this new, I don’t know how to describe what I’m trying to say. But if you see it like, in a fan video it just, and you’ve never heard the song before, suddenly it’s a Veronica Mars song.

THEO: It’s true.

BAILEY: And you can picture it in the show, and you know; it’s just perfect. So, definitely. You’ll vote for one of the songs that we play on here, and you can also if you want to you can throw in a few other songs that you think would be really awesome on the show anyway. ‘Cause I always like to discover new music and to listen, and stuff like that, so. Yeah. Just send me an email at: bailey@neptunepirateradio.com with the song name in the subject line so I can sort ‘em out and count the votes, and we’ll let you know before each song plays what the name of the song is, and the artist. So, it’ll be good.

SANDY: Excellent.

THEO: Excellent.

BAILEY: Thanks.

SANDY: Well, on that note I think we’ve probably covered- have we covered everything?

THEO: I think we did.

BAILEY: I think so.

SANDY: So I think that that’s, that’s pretty much all we have. We still have to, you know, take a little break and we’ll come back, and we’ll do our little inspirational message spiel that we always do, but the next time you guys will hear from me will be – fingers crossed – live from Comic Con.

BAILEY: Woo!

THEO: Woohoo!

[Wait, what? Is this it? What? Are the other thirty minutes filled with songs? Woohoo! Cameron has caught an awesome break! Yay!]

SANDY: Um. And, yeah. I think we cranked out another, another week.

BAILEY: Yay!

SANDY: Hopefully we’ll be better about being on schedule this time.

[Laughter]

SANDY: Except that I totally I lied and we have a fan interview that’s gonna come up.

THEO: That’s right.

SANDY: So please disregard everything that I just said.

[What? Wait. WHAT? There IS more? Dude. Dude. Duuuuude. That was NOT cool. That was the definition of not cool. Thanks for putting a naked Logan into Cameron’s hands and then YANKING him away. That’s what that was like. Cameron is SO bummed.]

[Laughter]

BAILEY: It’s been a long week.

THEO: So we’re gonna go away. Come back with a fan interview. Go away again. And that’ll be it for us.

[WILD SANDY LAUGHTER. CAMERON IS NOT AMUSED.]

BAILEY: That’ll be it.

SANDY: That’s right! I’m sorry! I totally suck sometimes! Um.

BAILEY: Oh, Sandy.

SANDY: In addition to Comic Con there’s another big event that’s gonna be coming up, and I can’t believe I’m such an idiot that I… anyway. We, we will be back after this break uh, to talk with one of the representatives from that event. See you soon, Pirates.

BAILEY: All right. Bye!

BAILEYVO: The next song for your consideration is You’ve Changed by Bob Gentry. If you’d like to vote for this song in the Veronica Mars music contest, send an email to bailey@neptunepirateradio.com with Song #2 in the subject line.

[Song. You just read it. Cameron is bitter, and only still loves Bailey because she is playing complete songs.]

[BITTER]

SANDY: Welcome back, Pirates. As promised, we have a very special guest with us today who’s gonna talk about, I think an awesome, amazing event that’s gonna be taking place in August. We have Denise from Booster Entertainment.

BAILEY: Yay!

THEO: Hello, Denise.

DENISE: Hi, there.

BAILEY: Hi.

DENISE: How are you guys doing?

[Pleasantries]

DENISE: Thank you for having me today.

SANDY: Oh, thanks for coming on.

DENISE: I’m really excited to tell you guys about it.

SANDY: Well, why don’t you tell us what’s going on?

DENISE: Okay. August 18th-20th in Burbank, California, we’re having a convention. We’ve had lots of conventions. But anyway, at this particular one we’re going to have three of the men from Veronica Mars. We’re gonna have Jason Dohring, Michael Muhney, and Francis Capra.

SANDY: Ooh.

DENISE: Yeah, exactly. It’s a three-day event. Imagine the three of them on stage at once.

SANDY: Oh, dear.

[Laughter]

SANDY: My heart is already racing a little bit faster.

DENISE: So it’s, it’s a small event. Only 500 people can attend. And so it’s, you get a lot of time around every actor. We have a couple of cocktail parties. We have a dance. We have um, question and answer periods. People can take their photos with the stars. They can, let me think. What else do we have? We have special luncheons that we have for charity, so those tickets will be on eBay.

THEO: Oh good.

DENISE: Yeah. We’re gonna have a costume contest that Michael Muhney’s going to be judging. We heard he was a judge at a different contest and that he’d been so funny, so we decided to do that.

BAILEY: He’s great.

SANDY: I can only imagine how funny Michael would be in that context.

DENISE: Oh, he’s so wonderful.

SANDY: We’ve had him a couple times. He is the absolute best. I adore him.

BAILEY: He’s hilarious.

DENISE: Yeah, he’s- we were at Wizard World and he was there with us, and he was just so wonderful. He’s the warmest man. You know, he was so great with his fans and he had such a great time. He was like a kid himself.

[Laughter]

SANDY: You say you have cocktail parties and things like that. Are the stars actually present at these things?

DENISE: Oh yeah. Yeah. All of the headlining actors come to the cocktail parties and they just, all you do is they circulate with the guests. It’s an open bar, premium liquor, which is of course, good.

[Laughter]

DENISE: It gives you a chance to just go up and, and chat with them. Just as if you ran into them in a bar someplace.

BAILEY: Right.

THEO: Now that you mention it, I am booking a flight as we speak. So.

BAILEY: You had Theo at premium liquor.

THEO: Right.

[Laughter]

DENISE: Everybody seems to like that. Um. But anyway, yeah, and you know you run into, you tend to run into the stars as you go around the hotel, because they’re usually there for the whole three days. I have lots of really funny stories about encounters with them.

THEO: Much more intimate than something like a Comic Con where there are a hundred thousand people there waiting for a glimpse. Sounds much more intimate.

[Wow, Theo. Cameron loves your lack of subtlety.]

DENISE: Oh, absolutely. And this is like, three days. Yeah. Much more intimate. Three days of concentrated Veronica Mars guys goodness. There’s lots of chances throughout the day to have something to do. There are photos and there are autographs. So, it’s not just that you get one panel and then they’re gone.

BAILEY: Right.

THEO: Right.

DENISE: You get a lot of time over the weekend with everybody.

BAILEY: Right.

DENISE: Yeah. They’re really fun events, and one of the best parts about it is just that the fans have a really good time getting together.

BAILEY: Yeah.

DENISE: Um. They’re also going to be having a um, a fan panel about fan activism. So I’m hoping to get some people from uh, Cloud Watchers there to maybe talk about what they’ve been doing, because that’s amazing.

SANDY: Oh, very exciting. Yeah. They’ve really had sort of a variety of different campaigns. So that’ll be really, I’m sure, exciting for other fan groups to sort of, hear about.

DENISE: Yeah, well also let me take this moment while we’re here. Cloud Watchers is having a raffle so, for two passes to this event. So check out the Cloud Watchers site.

SANDY: Oh really?

DENISE: Yeah. Absolutely. Check it out and buy a raffle ticket, and get a chance to come out here and do something good at the same time. So.

THEO: Excellent.

SANDY: Now, what do people who win the raffle get? I mean, do they just get, um, a pass to the panel?

DENISE: Oh, no, no. You get a weekend pass, and with the weekend pass that means that you get everybody’s autograph who’s there. And we have a lot of other actors too, I don’t know who else, you know, the fans of Veronica Mars are particularly interested in. We have Michael Rosenbaum from Smallville. We have Brendan Fehr from Roswell. We have CSI: Miami.

THEO: Oh, wow.

DENISE: We have a whole bunch of people. So anyway. They get autographs with everyone. They get to attend all of the question and answer periods, fan panels, the dance. They get to go to the dealer’s room, the signing room, which is guests that aren’t the headliners, that’s how they make their money. They come to these events and they sell their autograph to fans. And they’re always there to talk. You don’t just, you know, stand in a line and wait for an autograph. They’ll just chat with you all afternoon if you want to. Um. Let’s see. What else? I’m losing my thought here.

SANDY: You said that there were photo events. Do they get to get a photo or anything like that?

DENISE: Generally, generally you can buy a photo with each of the guests. And the reason that those are charged for is because they share the costs, I mean, they share the profits with the guest. So that’s one of the things they do. However, as part of this raffle you get a um, Men Are From Mars photo opportunity, which is really limited. Fifteen people get this. Can buy these.

THEO: Oh wow.

BAILEY: Oh wow.

DENISE: So it’s your chance to have your picture taken with all three of these guys.

BAILEY: Oh my God. That’s very exciting.

DENISE: You get to pose for a photo with these guys, chitchat with them, hope maybe the photographer kind of makes sure you get a second chance at it.

[Laughter]

DENISE: It’s a photo with Jason Dohring, Michael Muhney, and Francis Capra. And that’s normally $120, because I have to pay all of them and my photographer. But, so that’s one of the things that’s included in the raffle, so it’s just gonna be a really good thing. I think people should be out there buying tickets.

BAILEY: Sounds like an awesome package.

DENISE: Yes. It is an awesome package.

[It’s three awesome packages. Don’t worry. Sandy will cut this out.]

SANDY: Do you know how much the raffle tickets cost?

DENISE: You know uh, actually I’m not sure. I don’t know. Five, ten dollars. I haven’t looked, which is bad.

BAILEY: I think I read that it was ten dollars. I think.

SANDY: Yeah.

BAILEY: Ten dollars for a raffle ticket?

DENISE: I apologize for not knowing that off the top of my head.

BAILEY: No.

SANDY: No. It’s okay. If people wanna find out more information about the raffle they can check out www.watchveronicamars.net, which is the home site for the Cloud Watchers campaign. So, if you wanna find out more information about the raffle you should head over there, because it sounds like for ten dollars you could get a really good deal.

THEO: Yeah. Quite a deal there.

BAILEY: Well she just said that the pictures alone for the Men Are From Mars photo shoot are $120. So. And that’s only one portion of the package of the entire package. That you get.

[Keep saying package.]

THEO: Oh wow.

DENISE: Exactly. Yeah. Normally the, the tickets, the weekend passes that we’re giving away are $229 each. So. We’ll give you two weekend passes, two weekend passes and the Men Are From Mars photo. So.

BAILEY: Wow.

DENISE: I mean that’s a lot.

THEO: That is a great deal.

BAILEY: That is. I’m gonna go buy like, ten raffle tickets right now.

[Laughter]

DENISE: Well the other thing is, people need to check out Cloud Watchers anyway, because donating the DVDs to the libraries; that’s just astounding.

BAILEY: Yeah.

DENISE: I just think it’s so neat that you can get a chance to meet all these guys and, you know, help the Cloud Watchers.

BAILEY: Definitely.

SANDY: I think that should be made clear. I think it’s 100% of the profits raised from the raffle are going to fund the DVD drive. It’s going to put Veronica Mars DVDs into libraries.

BAILEY: Right.

SANDY: So, your money’s not going into somebody’s pocket. It’s going into the, you know-

BAILEY: Help Veronica Mars.

SANDY: Help Veronica Mars.

THEO: Right.

DENISE: Yup.

SANDY: So it’s a 2-for-1 deal. Now. You said that this is in Burbank. Are most of the people who go to this event from California?

DENISE: No. We get people from all over the United States with a lot of people from the East Coast and the Midwest. But we also get people, we get quite a few people from England, usually. And, you know, occasionally farther than that. We get people from Australia and New Zealand, all sorts of places.

SANDY: Wow.

DENISE: And what people do is they come out, and they share hotel rooms. We have a place on our board where you can, you know, put up that you’re looking for a roommate and they’ll all pile into one room. Because airfare, airfare’s pretty cheap.

BAILEY: Right.

DENISE: It’s generally worth it.

BAILEY: Well, and when you don’t have to-

[CAMERON: -work.]

DENISE: You can come down and have a really good time.

BAILEY: Right. Well it sounds like a great time. It sounds like a really good opportunity to just kinda interact with these people in a natural setting, where it’s not all orchestrated. Like the Comic Con.

[Wow. Bailey one-ups Theo in the BURRRRN department.]

DENISE: Yeah. Because not only is it more comfortable and relaxed for all the people who are attending, because you aren’t treated like cattle. You can take your time with the guests.

BAILEY: Right.

DENISE: But. You know, also the guests themselves are much um, more relaxed than they are at say, a huge convention, Comic Con or Wizard World.

BAILEY: Right.

DENISE: Because they just have a few people they have to interact with. So it’s great.

BAILEY: And plus the premium liquor is flowing freely, so everybody’s relaxed.

DENISE: Yeah. This is true. The premium liquor at the cocktail party is a very, very good thing. I always enjoy it. But you know that’s the other thing. Yeah. It relaxes everybody.

BAILEY: Right. Yeah. Well it just sounds like such a great setting to interact with the people that you admire or that you want to meet. The way you describe it makes it sound like a really great deal.

SANDY: Definitely.

DENISE: Well it is, and you know, fans get together and they get to meet each other, people who’ve talked online get to meet each other.

BAILEY: Right.

DENISE: It’s not always just about the actors. A lot of the convention is just about getting to know the other people that love what you love.

BAILEY: Exactly.

SANDY: Yeah. I though that was definitely true with the Austin event, the Austin Marsathon, which was also a smaller event.

DENISE: Yeah.

SANDY: It seems like, you know, it was a great event but it was more condensed in terms of what you got to do and as far as interacting with the actors. But I think most people just had a blast interacting with each other and, you know, getting to hear scoop on the new season and things like that, so. Definitely sounds like something I want to check out.

BAILEY: Definitely.

SANDY: And we encourage all of you guys to check it out, whether you buy a raffle ticket or you go to the site.

THEO: Absolutely.

SANDY: What’s the website for the event?

DENISE: Sure. It’s www.boosterevents.com.

SANDY: Great.

THEO: Excellent.

BAILEY: Check it out.

SANDY: So you should go check it out, and you guys have events all year long too, for other shows.

DENISE: Absolutely.

SANDY: Firefly, Buffy.

DENISE: Yeah. And we were hoping, maybe in the future to have a complete, a complete Veronica Mars convention.

SANDY: Ooh. Very exciting.

THEO: That would be great.

DENISE: So we’ll see how things go, and we’ll maybe do that.

BAILEY: Yeah.

SANDY: Very exciting. Well thanks so much for stopping by to talk about the event.

BAILEY: Thank you!

SANDY: I think it sounds amazing.

DENISE: Well thank you guys.

SANDY: And hopefully our listeners out there will uh, will go check it out and have the opportunity to meet some really, really hot and amazing…

DENISE: Okay. Well thank you guys.

BAILEY: Thank you. Bye!

DENISE: Buh-bye!

THEO: Bye.

[Laughter]

BAILEY: You sounded like a prissy old woman!

[More laughter]

VOICE: Guys! Come on!

VOICE: Hands In Pants!

SANDY: Hands In Pants!

THEO: Now you should say something totally non sequitur.

SANDY: [More Scaraccent] Hey guys, what about that time in the episode…

[Laughter]

THEO: Wow. We actually do like you, Scarlett. We’re sorry.

BAILEY: We do! No. This is why we, this shows how much we do like you.
