MMVO: Hi, this is Michael Muhney, and you’re listening to Neptune Pirate Radio.

[Cameron, the transcriber, is filled with love. The theme music plays.] Opening Theme: Vancefurd – Pirate Song

THEO: Welcome back, Veronica Mars fans. This is the second podcast of Neptune Pirate Radio. This is Theo and with me are my co-hosts Sandy and Scarlett. Say hello.

SANDY: Hey.

SCARLETT: Hi there.

THEO: So uh, tell me about your week. I hear you’ve both had some interesting conversions.

SANDY: I had- I’ve had three conversions, actually. It was an excellent week.

THEO: Wow.

SCARLETT: Impressive.

SANDY: Yeah, one of them I think is probably my favorite story I’ve heard yet of my own personal conversions.

THEO: [snickers] Yeah. Well please share.

SANDY: Don’t worry. I will. It’s a good friend of mine from law school and I would’ve sat her down and made her watch the first season myself except, you know, she lives in a completely different city than I do. And she’s just been hearing me go on and on and on about how great the show is, and how I went to Austin to meet the cast, and how we’re doing this now. So she finally decided to just get the first set of DVDs and watch them. Not only did she watch them in a weekend, but she and her husband got into an argument over who was gonna go get dinner because neither one of them wanted to stop watching long enough to go get food.

SCARLETT: Oh that’s awesome.

THEO: Very nice.

SANDY: Yeah. She’s totally addicted now, and she didn’t want to wait to watch the second season until there were DVDs or until she could go over to a friend’s to watch them on TiVo. So she actually just spent all day Tuesday on www.marsinvestigations.net, and completely caught up on the season and tuned in on Tuesday night, and she is totally addicted. I love it.

THEO: Wow. That’s very impressive.

SCARLETT: I love that she’s kind of got into it already. I mean some people thought it would be a bit confusing to start so late in this season. I love that she’s kind of managed to kind of fit in there.

SANDY: I know it’s-

SCARLETT: You can still enjoy it.

SANDY: Exactly. You don’t have to have started with the first episode this season as is evident by the fact that she just jumped in now and was asking the same kind of questions I think all of us were asking after the episodes. So it wasn’t, she wasn’t nearly as confused as I think a lot of people think they would be if they were just jumping in.

THEO: Yeah. I have an interesting conversion story myself this week.

SANDY: Well share.

SCARLETT: Ooh.

THEO: I will. I work in a big room full of people that do nothing but read very boring documents all day. And to sort of spice things up a bit sometimes we bring in DVDs and, you know, sort of circulate them among ourselves. And um, one of my friends there started watching the show. She watched the first DVD and begged me to bring the second one. And after a few episodes into the second disc she looks up at me and says: “They’re brother and sister, aren’t they?” And I just-

SCARLETT: That is so cool.

THEO: -I didn’t know what to say. I, I couldn’t discourage here. I was like, “well, that’s something that you’ll have to think about.” And uh, she absolutely loves it. I was afraid she wouldn’t, but it was just the best reaction I could have hoped for.

SANDY: That’s awesome.

THEO: Yeah.

SCARLETT: That is really cool.

SANDY: I love watching when people are just first starting and hearing their reactions because I- I remember what my reactions were, and whenever I convert somebody I either make them watch them with me, because I wanna see it, or with this friend of mine from law school, uh, when she took her first break she was just about to watch Weapons of Class Destruction. And I was like, “please, please send me an email and tell me what you think after you watch that episode. And then send me another email after you watch Hot Dogs.” Because it’s just so great to see after that first kiss or, or you know, when Aaron beats the crap out of Trina’s boyfriend. I love seeing those reactions. It’s so fun.

SCARLETT: Oh yeah.

THEO: I remember watching it with you. And every episode we’d sit down and watch it together and you’d get my reactions over instant message, so.

SANDY: I know. I loved it. I loved it.

THEO: Good times. Good times.

SANDY: It was so fun.

SCARLETT: You know what though, guys? I have to say; our ratings for people who were watching were not as great as they could have been this week.

SANDY: Uhoh.

THEO: Oh no.

SCARLETT: Over the two days- Obviously, it was preempted in Los Angeles. That’s a huge market for us, isn’t it?

SANDY: Yeah.

THEO: It’s a major market.

SCARLETT: It was a new timeslot this week as well. But over the two nights, because UPN did rerun it in its normal timeslot, we got about 3.5 million viewers.

SANDY: Is that about on par?

SCARLETT: Which isn’t great for two days. It is about on par for what we usually get, but I think it will be better once people- ‘Cause there are a lot of fans who normally watch, who forgot to watch.

SANDY: Right.

SCARLETT: Because, you know, it’s a new timeslot.

THEO: Yeah.

SCARLETT: So I wouldn’t be as discouraged as we think we are.

THEO: Good. Good, I hope things pick up.

SCARLETT: So at least we’re still keeping up there. Definitely.

SANDY: Tune in! Please watch!

THEO: Yeah.

SANDY: It’s getting so- the whole season, I think, has been really great.

SCARLETT: Remember!

SANDY: It’s getting- it’s really picking up.

THEO: Yeah.

SCARLETT: This week was amazing.

SANDY: Oh, it was so good.

SCARLETT: I’m sure we’ll ramble about that later.

THEO: I can’t wait. I can’t wait.

SANDY: We’ll be getting to it.

THEO: Absolutely.

SANDY: Well, if you’re trying to get people to tune in for the first time, one of the things you can do: I know we talked last week about some of the fan efforts that go on. This week the Veronica Mars blogs, the Neptune Navigator online is starting up. You can definitely check that out. As well as www.sheswatchingyou.com. It’s an excellent site. Write that site all over your money. Write it on flyers.

SCARLETT: And we’ll have links on our own site.

SANDY: Yeah, we’ll have links for all that.

SCARLETT: Get them straight from our site.

SANDY: Definitely.

THEO: But while you’re waiting for that, go out and write it on signs, bus stops, bathroom walls. Although, bathroom walls might be a little scary.

SANDY: Yeah. That would be a little sketchy.

SCARLETT: She’s Watching You, in a bathroom?

THEO: Yeah, it’s… That’s true.

SANDY: I don’t think we should recommend that people go do that. But write it everywhere else. Just as long as it gets out there. I think that’s what’s most important.

SCARLETT: Definitely. And actually, don’t we… we have some good ideas from people who’ve been listening to us, don’t we?

THEO: Absolutely. We’ve had a lot of listeners respond very positively and we’re very grateful for all of that. And because we have no way of really knowing how many people are listening to our show, I’m gonna take a page from the uh, Nielson ratings book and uh, multiply our viewers by several million. So. I’m gonna say we had at least 35 million viewers this week. I’m very happy to say that. Absolutely.

SANDY: Excellent job!

SCARLETT: Thanks guys!

SANDY: Thank you. Thank you for tuning in and thank you for linking. I’m sure 30 million viewers will help out Veronica’s viewership.

THEO: Yes.

SCARLETT: If we could get 30 million people to be watching the show, extra, that would be excellent.

SANDY: That would be awesome. That would be awesome.

THEO: I think, I think we have a very special treat for those who have tuned into our podcast this week, don’t you?

[CAMERON: YEEEEESSSSSS!]

SANDY: Um, we have an amazing treat.

SCARLETT: Do tell!

THEO: Oh yes. We have a very special guest star. Michael Muhney, the voice and person of Sheriff Don Lamb is here to join us later in the show, and we’ll be talking to him for a few minutes.

SANDY: I’m so excited. I’m so excited. I’m like, shaking. I’m so excited.

THEO: I’m very excited to see how that all turns out.

SCARLETT: So guys, stay tuned because you don’t want to miss that.

THEO: Absolutely.

SANDY: Definitely not. And, you know, we were talking about things that we got as ideas from the fans. One of the best ideas we got – and we’re gonna try and incorporate as many of the suggestions that you guys made as possible – but one of the things that we’re gonna get on immediately, is this idea that although there are so many great things that we got on the DVDs… For example, we got some extra scenes. And, we get to watch the episodes at our leisure. They’re, quite honestly, lacking in the extras department. And Rob came through a little bit there and he gave us, on his own site, a pilot commentary. But one of our listeners wrote in and suggested that we should do a commentary of a DVD episode. And I think that would be such a blast.

SCARLETT: Sounds awesome.

THEO: I like it.

SANDY: So we’re gonna compile a list of some of our favorite episodes from the first season and put those on our website, www.neptunepirateradio.com, and you the listeners can vote on which episode we will do a commentary for. We’ll announce the winner of that poll next week, and we’ll let you know when we plan on getting that DVD extra uploaded to our site.

SCARLETT: Great.

THEO: Great.

SANDY: And I think that takes us into our first segment guys, so why don’t we cut out now, take a little musical break, and we’ll be right back after this.

[MUSICAL BREAK! Marina V – In My Head. Cameron, the transcriber, lurves the musical break. You know what she loves more? Michael Muhney! Stay tuned!]

THVO [THEO V.O.]: The following program is brought to you by Brain Bleach, for all your Internet surfing, fanfic needs.

[Thunder rooooolls]

MYSTERY VO:Six days thou shalt labour on your fanfiction, but the Seventh Day thou shalt rest; for Rob made Veronica Mars and blessed Tuesday, and hallowed it. Thou shalt honor thy language; for grammar and spelling is only second to cleanliness. Thou shalt not covet another writer's wit or steal it. Thou shalt not woobify Logan; for that is the work of Rob. Thou shalt not assassinate characters. Thou shalt not use "Ronnie;" for Rob jealously guards the privilege of irony. Thou shalt not write songfic for it is vile and an abomination before Rob. Thou shalt not write about babies; for they are Rob's breakfast food. Purple prose. Just say no. Thou shalt not suck; and I shall not smote.

[Cameron, the transcriber, is glad she changed every “though” to “thou.”]

[MORE MUSIC! American Anthem – Complicated Girl. It’s pretty cool. ]

SANDY: All right. Welcome back. Now, I think it’s time to talk about this week’s episode, I Am God. And, oh my gosh.

SCARLETT: Woo!

SANDY: Holy cow. So much stuff happened.

SCARLETT: No, no. No, Sandy. Not, oh my gosh. Oh. My. God.

THEO: Yeah.

SANDY: Oh yeah. Oh my God. It was just amazing. There’s so many things that happened this week.

THEO: My brain is still fried from watching it, and I’ve seen it twice.

SCARLETT: I can’t even process it.

SANDY: Me either. My brain is completely fried and I think I could try and list to you all the things that happened this week, but it would inevitably miss them.

THEO: Yeah.

SCARLETT: No, I think you should try and list some. Do a quick wrap up for us.

SANDY: Okay. All right.

THEO: Yeah. No script. No clues.

SANDY: I have no script. Okay.

SCARLETT: What have we learned in this episode?

SANDY: Okay. I’m gonna try and remember everything that, that came out.

THEO: Oh. Love it. Love it.

SANDY: We learned that Dick and Beaver’s dad took out a life insurance policy three days before the bus went over the cliff. We learned that Cassidy thinks that it’s the story of his life to take abuse for things that Dick is too big to take abuse for. [Murmurs of agreement.] We learned that a cell phone was definitely involved in triggering the bomb on the bus.

THEO: Right. Which I think we knew. I think we knew that before.

SANDY: Yeah. We actually did kind of know that. But Veronica-

SCARLETT: It’s just being hammered in there.

THEO: But Veronica did not, you’re right.

SANDY: Veronica caught up a little bit. We learned that one of the kids on the bus, Peter, was about to make an “outing of all outings.” And that’s all I’ve got. That’s all I’ve got. I know there was more. I know there was more. But I’m just gonna say that.

THEO: Good.

SCARLETT: But that’s the important stuff.

SANDY: I think those are the big things.

THEO: Yeah.

SCARLETT: Yeah.

SANDY: So, one of the things that I noticed this season, and it- I don’t know why it’s just hitting me now. And I think what caused it to hit just now was when Keith found Veronica in the closet.

[THEO laughs]

SCARLETT:  That was a great moment.

SANDY: And it made me realize how that’s been sort of a recurring theme this season, with people in closets, whether figuratively or literally. I started trying to piece together all of the episodes that were about children, and shame, and hiding something. Whereas last season I feel like there was this overall theme of sex and violence, starting with the Pilot, and the strippers. And even in Drinking the Kool-Aid they thought there was some sort of nefarious sex scam going on there. They thought there was sex going on in Credit Where Credit’s Due, when Chardo and Paris Hilton are sleeping together. I mean it was a recurring theme. The rape. So much sex, and so much violence.

THEO: Absolutely. Absolutely.

SCARLETT: I would completely agree. This season is so; like- It really is a good counterpart to the first season because it is like, the consequences of the first season.

SANDY: Right.

SCARLETT: You know we get all the noir-ish kind of sex, murder, violence, in the first season. Which is ironic really, because there’s not actually that much sex going on in the first season, you know, with our main characters.

THEO: That’s true.

SANDY: With our main characters. Yeah. Totally true.

SCARLETT: Compared with the second season where, you know, all Veronica and Logan, especially Logan, seem to do is have sex.

[THEO laughs]

SCARLETT: You know, but it does seem to be more about the consequences. Duncan and Meg’s baby…

THEO: Yeah.

SANDY: The parents finding out with Marcos, you know, things like that.

THEO: Absolutely.

SCARLETT: Yeah. And there’s a lot more to talk about from the kind of, homosexual side. That comes up in several episodes, you know. It’s kind of a big thing. And obviously that’s got that whole “in the closet” kind of cliché. Like you said, we’re seeing a lot of people in kind of small, confined spaces this season.

SANDY: Yeah, and I wonder how it’s gonna tie together. You know, because last season sex and violence sort of came together to give us our answer. And I’m wondering how the consequences of that, the children in shame and secrets, is gonna culminate in this year’s mystery. This year’s final result.

SCARLETT: And that’s a really good point though, with them culminating because like, obviously the whole murder came down to sex, because Lilly was sleeping with Aaron.

SANDY: Right.

SCARLETT: I mean that was the main point.

SANDY: Yeah.

SCARLETT: So yeah, you have to wonder where all this kind of talk about homosexuality and being “in the closet” and consequences, how that’s gonna kind of merge together into an ending.

THEO: It should be very interesting.

SCARLETT: I have faith in Rob. I do.

THEO: Absolutely. Absolutely.

SANDY: I can’t wait. I can’t believe we’re in the final four episodes. And I, I’m just dying. Every week I just can’t wait for the next one to come on so we can learn something new.

THEO: Well before we get to the next ones, let’s talk about this one. I was really confused at first, and I know a lot of people I spoke to were really confused about the whole, you know, like the flashback scenes?

SANDY: Yeah.

SCARLETT: Yeah.

THEO: A lot of people wanted to know whether those were ghosts or whether they were just sort of memories, but she was interacting with them so they couldn’t be pure memory… And I really think that, my personal opinion is that they were sort of her subconscious throwing things back at her. She’s got all these facts and she really hasn’t processed anything. She’s got all this raw material, this raw data in her head, and finally it’s gotten to the point where she just can’t take it anymore. She’s gotta start putting things together. So her brain, her subconscious, whatever you wanna call it, just starts throwing these images at her and, you know, forcing her to confront them. And that’s why I thought those scenes-

SCARLETT: A little bit like an imaginary friend.

THEO: -I. I guess so. Yeah. I think that’s a… I think so.

SCARLETT: It is a lot like the Lilly thing from last season. They don’t tell her anything she doesn’t know. They don’t have any extra information. So they’re not “of their own.” You know, they are “from her.” Almost like projections from her brain, like you said.

SANDY: Yeah. And I was really happy to see that because when I saw the preview for the episode I was a little concerned that we were gonna get a little Ghost Whisperer on our show.

[Laughter]

SANDY: Like, she was gonna start communicating with the dead. You know. All out Patricia Arquette.

THEO & SCARLETT: I see dead people…

SANDY: And I don’t want that on my show. I mean, those shows are great. But I don’t want that. That’s not why I watch Veronica. So it was really, I thought it was really well done how, you know, those stereotypes of the students on the bus sort of evolved, as her knowledge of them grew greater. And you could really tell that it was her- we were inside her mind, rather than some external force playing a role in what was going on.

SCARLETT: I did really enjoy that though. The stereotyping.

THEO: Oh gosh.

SCARLETT: Because it’s something that Veronica’s known for. Whether or not people want to admit it, she does like to label people and put them in little boxes.

THEO: Yeah. I think so too.

SANDY: Yeah. That’s totally true.

SCARLETT: Even with the rhinestone shirt.

THEO: The rhinestone shirt. And…

SCARLETT: And the “Baby on Board.”

THEO: Yeah. The uh, “I [heart] Dick” T-shirt, thankfully.

SANDY: Theo, you’re gonna have to indulge us for just a minute.

THEO: Sure.

SANDY: I know we promised last week was the only week we were gonna do this.

THEO: Oh no. But you know what? After this-

SCARLETT: But it was a lie!

SANDY: It was totally a lie.

THEO: -After the scene from this week. After the scene from this week there’s absolutely no way around it. So I’m just gonna let you guys head right into that.

SCARLETT: So, Sandy. There was one, special flashback I think, which I think Rob put in there just for us.

SANDY: Just for, just for you and I, I think.

SCARLETT: Yes.

SANDY: No. It’s for everybody out there who loves Logan and Veronica scenes.

SCARLETT: LoVe!

SANDY: Yes. LoVes, Logan and Veronica scenes. So HOT. So HOT.

SCARLETT: Amazing.

SANDY: It was so great.

SCARLETT: I liked also, in a less than shippy basis – and that sound really weird to say out loud, shippy – but in a less than shippy basis I really liked seeing some more of the summer, because I feel a little cheated out of the summer.

SANDY: Yes. Yeah. Definitely. We just heard about it.

SCARLETT: I hate that we missed three months.

SANDY: I’m so glad we got to see a little peek into that. You know, in a way that sort of, I think, gives us a clue to what’s going on. I don’t think it was completely gratuitous. It wasn’t just put in there so that we could see the super-hot chemistry.

SCARLETT: Although I think it was a little bit. It was pretty hot.

SANDY: Well. Yeah. I mean you could have gotten that information out in a lot of ways. Just like Logan could have gotten information out a lot of ways. But he decided to-

SCARLETT: I think Logan was enjoying that scene as much as we were, that little reminiscence.

SANDY: Oh yeah.

THEO: Yeah. Especially when she told him to refocus on the story. She’s like: “Get to it.”

SCARLETT: I think we were all snapping with Logan there. We were like: “No, Veronica. No.”

SANDY: Back up, Kristen. Let the man talk.

SCARLETT: To be fair though. We learned some plot stuff, and I really am intrigued to see how Lucky the janitor is gonna come into this whole thing, especially since he has some kind of link to Meg, but also to church. Church has played quite a big role so far with the Fitzpatricks and the PCHers.

SANDY: Yes. And the whole confession…

SCARLETT: It’s another part of the shame thing and confession. Yeah. Exactly.

SANDY: Yeah.

SCARLETT: I wanna know some more about that.

SANDY: Definitely. There’s just so many of these little things that are popping up and I can’t wait to see how they get woven together. But before we move away from Logan entirely, can I just say… Logan and Wallace working together to save Veronica!

[THEO laughs]

THEO: Very nice.

SCARLETT: They were study buddies!

SANDY: Aw! They were study buddies!

SCARLETT: That was amazing.

SANDY: And you know that part of Logan doesn’t really want Veronica to go away to Palo Alto and leave Neptune. But he knows that that’s what she wants, so he was trying to work with Wallace to get it. I thought that was so great.

SCARLETT: He wants what she wants. I have to admit, though, I was completely confused about how their grade affected her. I was staring at my TV for ages thinking; am I really slow? Why? She’s not even in that class. Until someone obviously explained to me that if they got the uh, exemption, than Angie Dahl did not. It took me a while to figure out.

SANDY: Right. And she’d have to take the exam, the possible buster of GPA. A lot of people were confused by that. I don’t think you were alone.

SCARLETT: I was not alone. Okay. I’m glad. Thank you to everyone else who is as slow as me.

THEO: I have one question. It sort of goes back to the mystery. Who do we think the “outing of all outings” is? I mean there’s so many characters that are sort of questionable.

SANDY: See, the obvious one would be Woody.

SCARLETT: Mayor McCreepy.

THEO: Woody, especially with last week’s- Mayor McCreepy. Speaking of which, we have a contest to settle as to what was the best, uh, Mayor-

SCARLETT: Which I totally just spoiled, guys. Sorry about that.

[They laugh.]

THEO: You really did. You just did. Our favorite was uh, Mayor McCreepy, sent in by a listener to whom we are very grateful.

SANDY: Yes. And we’ll credit that listener on our site.

SCARLETT: I still feel like there’s something a little bit wrong with uh, Woody Goodman. I like Creepy Woody Goodman.

THEO: I like that.

SCARLETT: I’m not gonna be won over by Mayor McCreepy.

SANDY: Creepy Woody Goodman is a classic, but Mayor McCreepy is good.

THEO: I think it also has to be mentioned, Officer Mahoney, from the Police Academy series. I’m very fond of those.

SANDY: Oh yeah.

SCARLETT: You guys were creative. Thank you for writing in.

THEO: Yes. Absolutely.

SANDY: Thank you for responding. We really appreciate it.

SCARLETT: I was scared nobody would and we’d have to make up stuff.

[They mock themselves.]

THEO: We got several.

SANDY: One listener dubbed him, um, Weirdo Goodman…

THEO: Yeah…

SANDY: We would’ve been at a complete loss. Clearly we’re not creative enough on our own.

THEO: Fortunately, we’re not making things up yet. The time may come, but uh, we’re not yet.

SCARLETT: We’re not quite yet.

SANDY: We haven’t gotten to that stage.

SCARLETT: By the way, that means that Michael Muhney really is going to be talking us later. We are not making stuff up for that.

THEO: That’s right.

SANDY: Yes we, we promise. He really will be here.

SCARLETT: It’s not me putting on a voice. I can’t do the American accent, guys. I can’t. Don’t worry.

SANDY: Yeah. Go see the Wizard. That’s about the best I can do. That’s mine. That’s my Sheriff Lamb impression.

THEO: Oh God.

SANDY: Why don’t you go see the Wizard and ask him for some wit?

THEO: Do you think he’ll tell us? Do you think he’ll tell us to go see the Wizard? I kind of hope he does.

SANDY: I hope so.

SCARLETT: Yeah, me too.

SANDY: We’ll see. And on that note, I think we should actually break and see if we can get him on the air.

THEO: We’ll come back and go see the Wizard, I guess.

SANDY: All right. See you soon.

THEO: Ask him for a sound byte.

SANDY: All right. We’ll be back after this.

[Cameron, the transcriber, is completely faked out because she thinks music is coming to give her a break. Alas, she is mistaken.]

SCVO [SCARLETT V.O.]: Ahoy Mateys! All good Pirates know that peg legs and patches are out. We’re all about the couture now. But if you don’t have time to track down the clothes from Veronica Mars, I’m here to give you a recipe for success. And don’t worry; links will be in the show notes. Just mix two part Lucky brand jeans with a liberal helping of Urban Outfitters, emphasis on the free, people. Then mix with a little bit of Diesel. Add a touch of Ben Sherman. Stir in a drop of The Gap, and don’t forget that generous dash of argyle. Spread liberally with witty T-shirt sayings, blazers, and layered T’s. Then decorate with fitted hoodies. And don’t forget the piece de resistance, that elusive American Eagle messenger bag. Stir continually, repeating steps as necessary, and preheat to HOT. That’s H-O-T. Sadly, you’ll soon see that a trust fund or rich other half may be required to complete this recipe. However, for more info on the looks of VM, head to: http://neptune_style.livejournal.com for up-to-date studies of the clothes from individual episodes.

[Ah, there’s the music. Screeching Weasel – Veronica Hates Me. Cameron, the transcriber, must rest her gnarled hands to look her best for Michael Muhney. Because she loves him. Madly. But the music is pretty emosewa! As all the kids say.]

[End of song with lyrics: “Veronica Hates Me”]

[INTERVIEW BEGINS!]

SANDY: Hi. Welcome back, Pirates. Just as promised we do have Sheriff Lamb here with us today, Michael Muhney.

MICHAEL: Hey guys!

SANDY: Oh, we really appreciate you coming in for us and agreeing to talk with us.

MICHAEL: It’s my pleasure.

SCARLETT: Excellent. I’m gonna have to cut in here Michael. Everyone that talks to us, we make them play Two Truths and a Lie. Do you have one for us?

MICHAEL: Um, let’s see here. Um. Two Truths and a Lie. Uh. I was born with pure white Albino hair, and grew up with that. I was arrested for mur- attempted murder.

[Gasps from Scarlett and Sandy.]

MICHAEL: And uh, let’s see. I uh, I’ve gotta be careful I don’t incriminate myself in anything either.

[Laughter]

SANDY: Yeah, you have to be careful. You have to be careful.

MICHAEL: Yeah, um. I actually helped give birth to a baby camel.

SANDY & SCARLETT: Ooh.

SCARLETT: Wow.

SANDY: Um. Okay. Well I don’t, I don’t believe you were actually ever arrested. I don’t, I don’t think that that’s where you get your law enforcement experience from. I don’t think that that’s it. I think that’s the lie. What do you think, Scarlett?

SCARLETT: I would go for the baby camel.

SANDY: You don’t, you don’t think he-

SCARLETT: I’m gonna say you did not help give birth to a baby camel.

MICHAEL: [laughs] Okay. Would you believe it if I said I fathered the baby camel, or could it be a lamb? I don’t know.

SANDY: Oh. Yeah. If you, if you had gone with lamb, I might have jumped in on it, but um, camel just seem… no. No I don’t think that’s it.

MICHAEL: Well um, the, the lie was… you’re, you’re quite right. It was the baby camel.

SANDY: Oh.

SCARLETT: Yes!

MICHAEL: I was in fact once in for attempted murder.

[Gasps again. Cameron is instantly attracted to Michael.]

SANDY: Really. I- I don’t-

MICHAEL: Yes.

SANDY: I’m shocked.

MICHAEL: Well, it’s sort of a fib. I’m sort of stretching it. I was in high school and I wasn’t arrested. I was handcuffed and taken to, to jail, but they never read me my rights and within an hour they let me go. Because apparently someone spotted me and I was wearing the same baseball cap and shirt, and was in the general area where somebody had beaten somebody close to death with a, with like a tire iron.

SANDY: Oh my Gosh.

MICHAEL: And. Yeah, I know. It was some high school kid or something and the guy hadn’t died, but they were gonna be charging him for attempted murder or whatever. And so they sweated me out and I was close to tears. Then they finally just let me go.

SCARLETT: That sound like something Lamb would do to Veronica. It really does.

[MICHAEL laughs.]

SANDY: Yeah. That’s… I, I’m shocked. Is that where you got your inspiration for Sheriff Lamb?

MICHAEL: Um. Perhaps. Perhaps. Yeah, maybe some close calls with cops, or observations on what they do. Uh. Maybe, maybe I’m just not as nice a guy as people think I am. Maybe I’m closer to Lamb than everybody thinks.

SCARLETT: No. I don’t believe that.

SANDY: I refuse to believe that. I refuse to believe that. There’s no way. So you guys just wrapped on Thursday [April 13th], right?

MICHAEL: We did indeed. Yes. And we just had the wrap party uh, last night. Um. Which went off well. Everyone was in great spirits.

SANDY: Oh good. So the atmosphere on set, everybody was really positive? I know we’ve been on pins and needles this whole time, sort of an emotional rollercoaster. Are they gonna get Season 3? Are they not gonna get Season 3? Everybody seemed pretty positive?

MICHAEL: Yeah. You know. Um. It’s interesting. You say is everybody pretty positive? And that’s sort of like a widespread question. No, not everybody. Some people are pretty negative. Some people are, are really blindly positive. But uh, even among us cast members, uh, there’s disputes and debates and, and uh, nobody really knows.

MICHAEL: And just to sort of squash some, some rumors that have kinda come out in the last couple weeks or even in the last couple days, and probably will come out in the next few weeks; I can tell you officially, from the horse’s mouth, what Rob Thomas has told me, and he has never once in the last couple years, ever lied to me or been deceptive or cryptic with me. He said that, uh, on May 19th is going to be when it’s officially announced, and when Dawn Ostroff makes her decision to pick up the show will be May 18th. And [she] will tell Rob, and only Rob. And of course then he can leak it to the, the cast members and we can all sort of have a quiet celebration on the phone. But until then, it is literally mere speculation, and if people are leaking things they’re getting misinformation or what.

MICHAEL: Just, just last night talking with producers and seeing people who brought their significant others and their family members to the wrap party, there’s all these families that are affected by the show being picked up or not. I mean people’s, people’s livelihood and, and uh, everyone’s hanging in the balance. And if we really knew there would be certain families who would have moved on and have gotten a job, or would have um, bought the house in the certain state or city that they were looking at, and they would’ve; they would’ve moved on. Or they would be buying some property in San Diego. Or doing whatever, making plans with their lives. Everyone is hanging in the balance. So there is no word. There will be no decision made by Dawn Ostroff until the 18th. And apparently, um, partly due to the fact that last year they told us that we were being picked up just a couple days after our wrap-

SANDY: Right.

MICHAEL: -And it upset other showrunners of other shows that just said hey, we wanna know. We’re- let us know. Give us the axe, or let us- tell us you’re picking us up. Uh, why would you let them know and not us. So. It, it has to be all fair across the board, and as a result, we’re all on pins and needles until May 19th. Me, I’m gonna be calling Rob on May 18th saying what did you hear? What did you hear?

[Laughter]

SANDY: Yeah. Yeah.

MICHAEL: You know. I mean, that’s what, that’s what we should assume is that not anybody could know anything. Including Rob.

SANDY: Okay. Well that’s good to know because I definitely know like you said, that the Internet has sort of been running rampant with rumors and speculation and I think everybody’s just been going crazy, and it’s good to know that-

SCARLETT: Don’t believe.

SANDY: Don’t lean on any of the rumors until we get to May 19th. So.

SCARLETT: I’m gonna be a little optimistic. If we do get our Season 3, where do you want to see Lamb go, his character. What do you want to happen?

MICHAEL: Um. Well I think that uh, maybe just broaden him a little more and pin certain elements of, of Lamb, who he is as a person. And I think that there might be, there could be some hints of uh, of Lamb not always in the office. Not always behind the desk. Not necessarily you’re gonna see a hundred percent of who Lamb is exposed and raw, um, cause I think that there’s always gonna be sort of a façade or some wall that he keeps up with certain people. But uh, I- I would like to see Lamb get uh, get out of uh, that Sheriff’s office. Even if he’s you know, wearing uh, you know, some ties and slacks. I’m not saying like, get out of the office.

SCARLETT: You’ve become a little bit more well-rounded like we saw with Logan. He started off as kind of a one-sided character until we saw more. It would be quite nice to see Lamb like that.

MICHAEL: Yeah yeah. I absolutely agree. And I have all of my faith in the, in the writers, and in Rob that uh, you know I- the Lamb character: one has to sort of suffice what, what the plot is and what, what’s going on with uh, with the mystery. And he has to sort of be uh, a roadblock to some degree. But also, through that journey of the mystery we can also find out more about who Lamb is and where he, where his vulnerabilities lie. But also maybe some, some of what we might find out about Lamb we might not want to know, because it might not be too pretty. But there might be that, some redeeming value to him. Absolutely. I would love to, to see that sort of broaden somewhat.

SANDY: Well I think, you know, like you said, that in a lot of ways Lamb can serve a lot of purposes. And I think that he could have been a very one-dimensional character that only served that purpose but you’ve brought so much to the role, and so many sort of shades of grey in every action that he’s taken. And I love that that the writers are starting to run with that. Even in the episode Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner, we got to see a little bit more about your past. So I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of that in the future.

MICHAEL: Oh. Me too.

SANDY: Can you tell us a little bit about what your plans are during the hiatus? I call it a hiatus because I like to just live in my dream world where we’re getting Season 3. So. What are your plans for the hiatus gonna be?

MICHAEL: [Laughs.] Uh. You’re, you’re uh. Um. You’re of the same mold that I am. I- I feel the same way. I call it a hiatus because I wanna believe that all it is is a three-month summer break. And, and most of us are, are talking like that. We’re trying to believe at least, um, it only is a summer hiatus. And for that hiatus, I will be um, probably in New York for a while in June. I’ll be in Chicago for a premiere of uh, a possible screening of uh, of a movie that I starred in that I shot in Chicago last year. I will be in Maui for my honeymoon that we finally get to go on.

SANDY: Well congratulations!

SCARLETT: Congratulations!

MICHAEL: Thank you so much. Actually, the honeymoon is going to be on May 20th, so literally the day after we will have heard good or bad news, we’re getting on a plane and we’re still keeping our fingers crossed that it’s good news so we can fly off into the sunset with big smiles on our faces.

SANDY: Yeah. It would definitely be a nice bonus to kick that honeymoon off with news of a renewal. Now, Michael, my final question for you- I know that you’re, you’re so great to your fans and you’re really involved in the online community. We really appreciate you coming on and doing this for us. But one of the places people can go in and check out sort of up-to-date information on you is on your livejournal community. Do you wanna tell us a little bit about that?

MICHAEL: Yeah. There’s um, there’s two places that I- well, I guess I could say three places that I frequent. Um. One, I have my webmistress uh, who has been involved with my website for many years now. Um. She takes care of www.michaelmuhney.com, and it’s a more informative, sort of factual site with my career and what’s up with me, and appearances, things like that. She makes sure things are up-to-date, and I can call her and I can let her know uh, what might be coming up. This date is wrong; it’s that date, blah blah blah,

MICHAEL: And then I like to uh, go and be invisible and just read uh, inform myself on what they on this, Television Without Pity, as well a site referred to me by one of the producers at the beginning of Season 2. So I can sort of go in there and, and peek in there and keep myself informed of what other people are thinking, and what they might be saying about a certain character or plot point.

MICHAEL: And then finally I have the livejournal account, which was um, an idea brought up to me by uh, a girl named Laura, who is the uh… I guess she’s the runner, or whatever, the creator. And um, I like to go there because I sort of feel like it’s an intimate way to just sort of, like sitting at the head of a classroom with a bunch of people who wanted to show up for extra credit and ask some questions about the show, or say a little bit or whatever. And it’s, it’s nice to be able to get direct feedback. I mean, without the Internet it would be uh, I don’t know. I don’t know what I would do or how you could really be in touch with fans. And I think it would be just speculation of what do fans think out there, in general, as opposed to being able to really get in the path of fireballs with people and get direct feedback as to what their likes and dislikes are, and it’s neat.

MICHAEL: I, I love it because, I mean bottom line; I know I’ve said this before, but I really mean it. I, I too am, am just a fan of the show. There is that side of me that is not an actor in it and has no [coughs] relation to the show- I’m merely just a fan as well and like to uh, chat about the show. Because it’s such a great, inspiring show, you know?

SCARLETT: [dreamily] Oh yeah.

SANDY: Well we certainly appreciate your participation in the online community, and I remember your post on the livejournal community on, on rack_of_lamb - which we’ll go ahead and link from our site for our listeners - when you got the script for the finale. And all you said was, all you did was talk about how excited you were for the finale, and that got me, personally, so pumped up to see the show.

SCARLETT: Oh I’m psyched. Yeah. Definitely.

SANDY: I definitely forward that around to all my friends. So it’s really great to sort of see that the people involved with it get just as excited as we do.

MICHAEL: Oh man. I gotta tell you. The, the mad thing of which I read the finale is even better. You know it’s, I show up to set one night and we’re filming out on location up in the hills and I go into my trailer, and there sits the script that has a unique label on the front of it. In huge letters, big bold letters, it says, “Confidential.” And underneath it, it explains to cast members and, and those very few people who are privy to the actual script. Not the spoilers, not the specs, but the actual, real script. Don’t say anything about anything. And like, people have run wild with all their speculations so they, they finally can be surprised with the uh, finale.

MICHAEL: And that, that cover on that script. I mean we were- we’re supposed to, it’s implied that we’re supposed to keep all the scripts pretty secret anyway. We don’t wanna give away, you know, a lot about the show. But part of it is a surprise. And when I saw that “Confidential,” it sort of got me salivating. I couldn’t wait to turn the first page and start to read. And so uh, fortunately I had been driven to set a little bit early, and I had some time. And so I read through it, front- front to back. And, I was just blown away. I mean I felt like I was watching the show, and I, and I was audibly laughing or saying out loud, “Oh no. No. You’re kidding me.” So I mean it’s, it’s a fantastic read, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. And now that we just finished shooting, I can tell you it’s really a fantastic episode. I like to be taken quite literally, a lot of times. And I know how people use these colloquialisms and oh, this is ten times better than this. And oh, you’ve never seen anything like this before. So I’ll be very careful with what I say, when I say that this finale, at least in my opinion, is about three times better than the Season 1 finale, which I thought was unbelievable and phenomenal.

SANDY: [swoons] Oh, wow.

MICHAEL: I’d say that this is three- you’re gonna need like, a chin strap to keep your jaw from dropping to the floor. It’s unbelievable. You’re gonna love it.

SANDY: I can’t wait. I can’t wait to see it.

SCARLETT: I’m so excited!

SANDY: Well Michael we certainly appreciate you calling in and taking time out of your day, on one of your first days off from the show, during your hiatus, and stopping in to chat with us. We really appreciate it. Thanks for coming in.

SCARLETT: Thank you.

MICHAEL: Oh well I, I- Absolutely my pleasure and uh, and I hope that there’s a, that there can still be some sort of online, um, communal conversation after the finale too; cause I’d love to read what everyone, what everyone’s response to the finale was. If it was uh, if it turned out as well at least as the script reads. You know, so.

SANDY: Oh yeah.

MICHAEL: I’ll be. I’ll be by.

SANDY: Okay great. Well we certainly appreciate it and we’d love to have you back here any time.

MICHAEL: It would be my pleasure. I, I’d love to come back. So this is certainly not the last uh, the last time we’ll visit on the phone here.

SANDY: Excellent.

[END INTERVIEW. For the love of LoVe, please put some music on so Cameron, the transcriber, can pass out from pain and delight.]

SANDY: And that was Michael Muhney, ladies and gentlemen. We were so excited to have him on the show, and incredibly grateful that he took time out of a very busy day to come chat with us. I do wanna let you all know that we did encounter, um, a few technical deficiencies in today’s broadcast. The technological gods were definitely not on our side. One of the things you might have noticed was that Theo appeared to disappear for the duration of that entire segment. And nobody is more disappointed about that than Theo. He just cut off the line and we lost him and we couldn’t get him back in, so.

SANDY: Theo, I’m so sorry. And we, we’ll get you back for the next segment. And for now, we are going to go straight into our music segment.

THEO: Welcome back, Mars fans. And Bailey, I have to say. I think this week’s episode, more than most that I’ve seen has really revolved around the music.

BAILEY: Oh yeah. There was some really, really great music this week and I think it just- I think this episode was very strong visually and orally, you know.

[They laugh.]

SANDY: Yes. Particularly during that scene um, in the first ten minutes when there were a lot of um, oral things going on. I’m not complaining.

THEO: They made out. Yes. They made out.

BAILEY: That was a very nice segue for me because that was just what I was gonna bring up.

SANDY: Excellent. Well, can you tell us what was playing during that scene?

BAILEY: I can. It was “Breathe Me” by Sia, and it was the Four Tet remix, which is really different than just the regular version and I think this version works very well in this scene.

THEO: Yeah I agree. I think- I’ve heard the original by Sia, but I’ve never heard the Four Tet remix and I have to say, it surprised me. I thought it was a really great addition to that scene.

SANDY: Oh me too.

BAILEY: Yeah, I think just the lyrics and the beat of the song just play really well in that scene, and actually to the Logan/Veronica relationship at that time. Well from what we’ve seen of it over the summer. Like the carefree, kind of having fun.

SANDY: Yeah. Oh definitely. It’s been on my playlist on repeat.

BAILEY: And if you wanna get a hold of that it’s on Colour the Small One album. And her website is www.siamusic.net and I believe you can purchase the album there as well.

SANDY: Excellent.

THEO: Great. Okay, what’s the next song on this week’s episode?

BAILEY: Okay, the next song comes when Veronica is on the bus with Peter discussing the “outing of all outings” and that’s “One More Time” by Daft Punk. Of course we had to have a token “gay song.”

SANDY: Yes.

THEO: Ah, you mean the uh, dance music song.

SANDY: The techno, gay club…

BAILEY: The strobe lights.

THEO: Right. Because the stereotype’s not quite as uh, complete without them revealing that, him wearing a rhinestone rainbow T-shirt and uh, hating baseball apparently.

SANDY: I liked the, I liked the rainbow T-shirt.

THEO: I did too. I was just impressed he wasn’t wearing the one that said “I [heart] Dick.” So, uh, I think that’s a step in the right direction.

[Laughter]

SANDY: Definitely.

BAILEY: Okay. Well I really, even though it’s stereotypical I like how we see Veronica where she’d like, come by new information and the characters would evolve in her mind. She had the conversation with Mr. Wu, and he mentioned that he saw Peter at a gay club, “Possibilities,” and so of course the next time we see Peter with Veronica you’ve got dance music and strobe lights going. And I think that it just kinda shows how her portrayal of these characters evolves. Because she, she didn’t really know these people.

SANDY: Right.

BAILEY: So she just had to kind of- she knows them by their discussion board postings or by what other people say, so I think she adds to that image of them as she learns new things.

SANDY: Yeah. I really liked that as well. We actually talked about that a little bit earlier. I thought that was fascinating.

BAILEY: Right.

THEO: That was Daft Punk’s “One More Time” during that scene?

BAILEY: Yes. And that’s on the album Discovery. And you can visit their website at www.daftpunk.com as well.

SANDY: We’ll make sure to put those music links up on our website as well.

BAILEY: Yeah. Yeah.

THEO: All right, Bailey. What was the final song for this episode?

BAILEY: Okay. The final song is “I Am God” by The Wannabees. And that’s what the episode was named after. And we hear that when Veronica’s listening to her Ahoy Matey’s [AARGH’s all around] on her mp3 Player and dreaming, and she finally realizes that the drawing on the back of the seat is just an LP cover and not some sort of message from the person who caused the bus crash. It kind of goes into her talking to Cervando and him, the Cervando in her mind telling her I just liked the band.

SANDY: Actually, it wasn’t Cervando. It was Marcos.

BAILEY: Yes, it was Marcos.

THEO: That’s all right.

SANDY: It was the Ahoy Matey’s. It’s fine. A lot of people actually made that same mistake. Even on message boards and in emails I got from friends, a lot of people were confused about why Cervando was talking to her at the end and people kept changing.

THEO: It’s true.

BAILEY: Right. I think it’s because we don’t really know these characters very well.

SANDY: Right.

BAILEY: Sorry.

THEO: That’s all right.

SANDY: That’s okay. You are not the first person who made that mistake, trust me.

BAILEY: Okay. Bad Bailey. Bad.

SANDY: You’re booted. You’re out.

THEO: We’ll overlook it this time.

BAILEY: Okay.

SANDY: One More Time though. Actually we should go the baseball theme. It should be three strikes and you’re out so if you make one more mistake after that, you’re gone.

BAILEY: The Daft Punk song is gonna be my theme song then.

SANDY: [sings] One More Time. [/sings] I should not sing.

[Laughter]

THEO: That has to go. If you can get me saying what I said last week, that has to go.

SANDY: Um. I have all editing control here, Theo.

THEO: I’ll make my own podcast.

SANDY: Yes.

THEO: Now, I know that there was another song in the episode but I didn’t know what it was, and I’ve seen a lot of people discussing it. They’re not sure what it was. I think it was- which, scene was that in?

BAILEY: Okay. The unconfirmed song is the scene with Rhonda’s sister in the parking lot where Wallace points her out, and Veronica wants to talk to her to find out a little bit more. And this song is playing in the background. A bunch of people have been trying to figure this out, like it’s gone from being Quiet Riot to being all these different other things and we haven’t really been able to pin it down, so.

THEO: Well, if anyone out there knows what it is, please feel free to email us and we’ll mention it next week during the music segment. That’s neptunepirateradio@gmail.com

SANDY: Yes. Um, Bailey. I have one more question for you.

BAILEY: Yeah.

SANDY: How excited were you to hear Michael Muhney on our podcast?

BAILEY: Oh that was so great. Wasn’t that great?

SANDY: It was the best thing ever.

THEO: I’m still getting over it.

SANDY: I’m so excited. I will not get over it. I’m still shaking.

THEO: I refuse.

SANDY: I refuse.

THEO: I refuse to get over it.

SANDY: I refuse.

BAILEY: He was wonderful.

THEO: Well, Bailey. That was a great wrap up for this week in music.

BAILEY: I actually have one more thing to say.

THEO: Sure.

BAILEY: I just wanted to say that I’ve been having very good luck finding music for the podcast. I thought it would be nice that if listeners out there, if you have a friend in a band who wants to be heard, or if you’ve heard some good songs on Veronica Mars or anywhere, that you’d like to hear on the podcast; you can email me and just give me your suggestions. My email is bailey@neptunepirateradio.com. And yeah, just any suggestions or music you’d like to hear would be great.

SANDY: All right.

THEO: Great. Thanks very much, Bailey.

SANDY: Thanks Bailey.

THEO: See you next week.

BAILEY: Bye!

[BYEs all around]

THEO: Well, that’s all we have for this week. Uh, I am so disappointed I missed out on the interview for some uh, technical snag. It cut me out of there.

SANDY: I know. I’m so, so sorry.

THEO: No. It’s all right. There will be another.

SANDY: But I’d just like to say, Theo, you did get to talk to Michael, right?

THEO: I did, afterwards, for about ten minutes. It was nice.

SANDY: Yes. We got you on the line and Michael did say that you and Veronica have something in common. Am I right?

THEO: That’s right. He said that my showing up late sort of one-upped him. He admitted that Veronica and I are the only two that have ever one-upped him. So I take great pride in that, I suppose.

SANDY: Yes. And Michael also agreed to come back on our show-

THEO: Absolutely.

SANDY: -Some time in the future. So we’ll definitely keep everybody informed of when that is, and Theo I promise…

THEO: Hopefully, before the finale this season.

SANDY: Yeah that would be terrific. That would be, yeah.

THEO: I told him, and I’ll tell everyone else that my birthday is May 19th, which is the day that we find out whether Veronica gets another season. So right now my only birthday wish is for Season 3, for Veronica to get to go to college.

SANDY: Yes. I think that’s the- my birthday’s coming up this weekend. I’m putting the vibe out there that perhaps, you know…

THEO: Increased viewership?

SANDY: Increased viewership. The ratings will go up. That’s my birthday wish.

THEO: Absolutely. Well I think that about wraps it up this week, don’t you?

SANDY: I think we’re good.

THEO: Well everyone thanks for listening, and we’ll see you again next week.

[MUSIC. The end theme plays. Cameron, the transcriber, is tired. But her love for Michael Muhney will keep her warm at night. She also can’t believe she’s added words like “woobify” and “McCreepy” to her spell checker.]
